• Imperial Caiques: The 19th-century imperial caiques, which are ornately decorated rowboats once used by the Ottoman sultans.
• Naval Uniforms and Artifacts: The museum houses an extensive collection of naval uniforms, along with other maritime memorabilia such as flags, maps, navigation tools, and weapons.
• Piri Reis Cartography: One notable section is dedicated to Piri Reis, the renowned Ottoman cartographer and navigator. His world maps and charts, especially famous for their accuracy, are displayed alongside navigation instruments.
• Paintings and Artifacts of Turkish Naval Heroes: Exhibits dedicated to figures like Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha (also known as Barbarossa) tell the story of legendary Ottoman admirals. The museum is located near his tomb, designed by the famous Ottoman architect Sinan, which is situated across from the museum.

Historic Caiques and the World’s Oldest Galley

Among the museum’s most remarkable exhibits are 14 sultans’ caiques — slender, ornately decorated boats once used by Ottoman royalty to navigate the Bosphorus. Some of these caiques, measuring over 32 meters in length, were rowed by up to 15 pairs of oarsmen. As per Ottoman custom, all other watercraft had to clear the path when the sultans’ vessels passed.

Notably, the museum houses the world’s oldest surviving galley, dating back to the early 17th century during the reign of Sultan Mehmet III.

The Famous “Kitab-ı Bahriye”

The museum also holds four copies of the “Kitab-ı Bahriye” (“Book of Navigation”), an invaluable navigation book written by Ottoman Admiral Piri Reis between 1511 and 1521. This book is famed for its early and detailed maps of the Mediterranean.

Renovated and expanded, the Istanbul Naval Museum has a modern copper-clad exhibition hall that opened in 2013. This new exhibition hall, with its galleries and eye-catching exterior, has transformed the museum into a major attraction in Istanbul.

• By Ferry: Take the Üsküdar-Beşiktaş, Kadıköy-Beşiktaş, or Eminonu-Beşiktaş lines to Beşiktaş Pier.
• By Bus: Several IETT buses (26, 26A, 26B, 27E, 27SE, 28, 28T, 29A, and 29C) stop at Beşiktaş Meydan.
