Istanbul, August 13, 2023 – Attention, Istanbulites! The iconic Galata Bridge, a crucial link between the old city and the magnificent Galata Tower, is undergoing essential maintenance and repair work by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). As part of this initiative, the Karaköy-Eminönü direction of the Galata Bridge has been temporarily closed to one-way traffic.

Maintenance and Repair Details

Starting from midnight tonight, the Galata Bridge will be the focus of a 40-day renovation endeavor. The IMM has planned the restoration in two stages, meticulously addressing joint replacements and asphalt renewal. In the first 20-day phase, the Karaköy-Eminönü direction will be closed to traffic. In the subsequent stage, the Eminönü-Karaköy direction will also experience a temporary closure, with alternative routes carefully organized to minimize disruptions.

Navigating the City While Galata Bridge is Closed

For those traveling from Karaköy to Eminönü during the first stage of the restoration, a detour will direct you from Karaköy to Tersane Street. Following this route, you’ll pass the Atatürk Bridge, facilitating your transportation to Eminönü via Unkapanı Junction and Ragıp Gümüşpala Street.

During the second stage, designed to last 20 days, vehicles traveling from Eminönü to Karaköy will be redirected from Eminönü to Ragıp Gümüşpala Street. After passing the Unkapanı Junction, you can reach Karaköy by crossing the Atatürk Bridge and taking Tersane Street.

Use T1 Tram and M2 Metro

As you navigate the city during the restoration, don’t forget that the T1 tram line operates as usual, allowing you to continue enjoying the splendor of Istanbul. Additionally, the M2 metro line remains open, providing an alternative means of transportation.

We understand the importance of minimizing disruptions to local businesses. Therefore, the tradesmen in the region will receive a one-day advance notice before the closing process begins. It’s important to note that the tram services will remain unaffected, and temporary bus routes have been established to ensure smooth transportation for all.
